US West Coast ports anticipate delays as dockworkers labor contract negotiation begins
West Coast dockworkers, organized under the ILWU, are expected to enter into negotiations with their employer, Pacific Maritime Association, as their six-year labor contract expires on July 1st. Negotiations will begin on or around May 15th.
Due to the potential for labor unrest, delays and increased costs, which could have a ripple effect on all USA and connecting lane port operations, Shippers/Freight Forwarders should stay informed and take preventative measures for their more time sensitive freight. Some shipping lines have begun to take steps to offset fuel and ad hoc operational costs by forward filing Congestion Surcharges, est. usd1100/40hc, to be levied if the need arises.
